The Level 01 Competency Standard for Automotive Mechanics, developed by the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) for the Light Engineering Sector, is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for basic skilled work in automotive servicing. The standard follows a demand-driven, competency-based approach aligned with industry requirements and covers occupational safety, basic mathematics, housekeeping, workplace English, ICT, technical manuals and drawings, automotive tools and major vehicle systems.
The Level 01 Automotive Mechanics Competency Standard provides a structured pathway for developing basic skilled automotive workers in the Light Engineering Sector. Through 360 hours of competency-based learning, trainees develop practical capabilities in automotive tools, major vehicle systems, suspension, cooling, lubricating, starting, fuel and ignition systems, supported by OSH, mathematics, housekeeping, workplace English, ICT and technical drawing competencies.
The standard is organized into three main categories of competencies, totalling 360 hours.

The course focuses on demonstrated workplace competence in accordance with the Automotive Mechanics Competency Standard.
Strong emphasis is placed on hands-on use of tools, vehicle-system servicing, fault diagnosis, component testing, repair and workplace maintenance.
Training emphasizes service manuals, manufacturer instructions, standard operating procedures, occupational safety and appropriate tools and equipment.
Written test, demonstration, oral questioning, workplace observation and portfolio may be used, as specified by the relevant competency units.
Competency assessment is to be conducted in an NSDA-accredited assessment centre and by an NSDA certified/nominated assessor, according to the applicable unit requirements.
Assessment evidence should be authentic, valid, sufficient, reliable, consistent and recent and meet the requirements of the current Unit of Competency.
Elementary understanding of underpinning knowledge in a specific study area, with ability to interpret common occupational terms and instructions.
Specific basic skills required to carry out simple tasks, interpret occupational terms and present the results of own work within a guided work environment or under supervision.
Work under direct supervision in a structured context with a limited range of responsibilities.
After assessment conducted by certified assessors, certificates will be issued by NSDA.
