About this course

The Level 01 Competency Standard for Electrical Installation & Maintenance, developed by the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) of Bangladesh, is designed to develop foundational electrical installation and maintenance skills aligned with industry requirements in the Construction Sector. The standard is intended to support competency-based training, assessment and certification and to improve employability through demand-driven skills development.

The Level 01 Electrical Installation & Maintenance Competency Standard provides a structured pathway for entry-level electrical workers to develop industry-relevant skills for the Construction Sector. It emphasizes occupational safety, practical electrical skills, proper use of tools, circuit installation, wiring and testing, and workplace readiness, providing a foundation for employability and further skills development.

Learning Outcomes

  • Perform workplace calculations using basic mathematical concepts.
  • Apply Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) procedures in the workplace, including identifying hazards, using PPE and responding to emergencies.
  • Practice housekeeping procedures and maintain the workplace, tools and equipment.
  • Interpret technical drawings, specifications and manuals relevant to electrical work.
  • Select, use and maintain appropriate hand tools and power tools.
  • Apply fundamental electrical concepts, identify circuit elements, use electrical formulas and measure electrical quantities.
  • Install electrical fittings such as switch boards, channels, junction boxes, batten holders and ceiling roses.
  • Perform series, parallel and mixed circuit connections.
  • Prepare wires and cables and perform common wire and cable joints.
  • Install basic electrical circuits, including lighting, calling bell and ceiling fan circuits.
  • Perform channel wiring and test electrical wiring for safe and correct operation.

The standard is organized into three main categories of competencies, totalling 340 hours.

Key Features and Assessment

Competency-Based

Focuses on what learners can do, based on the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for workplace performance.

Assessment Methods

Written tests, demonstrations, oral questioning and portfolio reviews.

Assessment Context

Competency assessment is to be conducted in an NSDA accredited assessment centre by an NSDA certified/nominated assessor.

Evidence Requirements

Evidence must be authentic, valid, sufficient, reliable, consistent and recent and meet the requirements of the current Unit of Competency.

Resource Requirements

Adequate workplace, appropriate tools and equipment, relevant materials, drawings/specifications, manuals, codes, standards and reference materials must be available.

Level Descriptor – Level 01 (Basic Skilled Worker)

Knowledge

Elementary understanding of underpinning knowledge in the specific work area, with the ability to interpret common occupational terms and instructions.

Skills

Basic skills required to carry out simple electrical installation and maintenance tasks and present the results of own work under guidance.

Responsibility

Work under direct supervision in a structured context with a limited range of responsibilities.

Certification

After assessment conducted by certified assessors, certificates will be issued by NSDA.
