About this course

The Level 02 Competency Standard for General Caregiving in the Informal Sector, developed by the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA), is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for semi-skilled caregiving work. The standard provides a competency-based pathway covering occupational safety, basic IT, caregiving principles, legal and ethical responsibilities, first aid, health screening, activities of daily living, clinical caregiving, nutrition, basic physiotherapy and housekeeping.

The Level 02 General Caregiving Competency Standard provides a structured pathway for developing semi-skilled caregivers in the Informal Sector. Through 360 hours of competency-based learning and 80 hours of workplace attachment, trainees develop practical capabilities in health screening, daily living support, clinical caregiving, nutrition, basic physiotherapy, housekeeping, first aid, OSH and basic IT.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply occupational safety and health (OSH) procedures, use appropriate PPE, identify hazards and risks, and respond to workplace emergencies.
  • Apply basic IT skills including computer operation, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, printing, internet use and email.
  • Interpret the ground rules of caregiving, including principles of caregiving, caregiver categories, job responsibilities, ethics, client support and caregiver well-being.
  • Interpret legal and ethical aspects of caregiving and recognize the rights of clients and caregivers.
  • Carry out basic first aid by assessing accidental situations and providing appropriate initial responses to victims.
  • Perform health screening by measuring vital signs, height and weight, blood glucose, and maintaining intake-output records.
  • Assist clients in activities of daily living (ADLs), including oral hygiene, toileting, bathing, grooming, feeding, home exercise, lifting and transferring.
  • Perform clinical caregiving activities, including basic clinical procedures, medication-related support, sample collection, wound dressing, catheter and colostomy care, and assistance with supportive devices.
  • Maintain nutrition, food safety and diet plans according to client needs and care requirements.
  • Apply basic physiotherapy in caregiving by assisting body movement and exercises.
  • Maintain basic housekeeping in caregiving through bedroom cleaning, laundry and ironing, and proper maintenance of cleaning items.

The standard is organized into three main categories of competencies, totalling 360 hours.

Key Features and Assessment

Competency-Based

The course emphasizes what the learner can demonstrate in accordance with workplace requirements rather than only how or where learning was acquired.

Practical Caregiving

Strong emphasis is placed on hands-on caregiving, health screening, ADLs, clinical care, nutrition, physiotherapy and housekeeping.

Workplace Learning

The CS provides for 80 hours of Workplace Attachment in addition to the 360 hours of competency-based learning.

Assessment Methods

Written test, demonstration and oral questioning are specified; portfolio/case study is also included for relevant units.

Assessment Context

Competency assessment is to be conducted in an NSDA-accredited assessment centre and by an NSDA certified/nominated assessor, as specified by the relevant unit.

Evidence-Based Assessment

Evidence should be authentic, valid, sufficient, reliable, consistent and recent and meet the requirements of the current Unit of Competency.

Level Descriptor – Level 02 (Semi-skilled Worker)

Knowledge

Basic understanding of underpinning knowledge in a specific work or study area, with ability to interpret and apply common occupational terms and instructions.

Skills

Skills required to carry out simple tasks, communicate with the team in the workplace, and present and discuss results of own work with required clarity.

Responsibility

Work or study under supervision in a structured context with limited scope of manipulation.

Certification

After assessment conducted by certified assessors, certificates will be issued by NSDA.
